History

In 1909, St. Anthony was established in Kalihi Valley as a shelter for orphans.  The Sisters loved and cared for hundreds of children from infants to teens. In the 1960s the government established the foster care system and the orphanage was closed.

Through the years, St. Anthony Home has had various uses:  a home for children, a kindergarten, a residence for high school students.   “Puawakea,” the Sisters’ residence continues as a convent for Eucharistic Adoration and distribution center for altar bread.  St. Anthony was converted into a retreat center in the early 1970s in response to a diocesan need for retreat facilities.
